About SACIDS Foundation for One Health

The SACIDS Foundation for One Health (SACIDS) is a ONE HEALTH Virtual Institute that links academic and research institutions in Southern and East Africa, which deal with infectious diseases of humans and animals within the African Ecosystem, in an innovative South-South-North smart partnership with world-renowned centres of research and training. The Founding external smart partnership, in 2008, are the University of London Colleges that constitute the London International Development Centre (LIDC) including the Royal Veterinary College – RVC – and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine -LSHTM. Other partnerships include collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), other institutions in the USA, UK and Asia. The Headquarters of SACIDS is located at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Morogoro, Tanzania.

SACIDS Mission

The Mission of the SACIDS Foundation for One Health is to undertake cutting edge, transdisciplinary and multisectoral research that is impact orientated, prioritised and system based. This will be undertaken in southern, central and eastern Africa and where appropriate delivered through strategic partnerships with academia, research institutes, and international organisations.

SACIDS Vision

The SACIDS Vision targets the impact that in Africa the health and food security and livelihoods are measurably improved through mitigation of the impact of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on humans, animals and the environment

SACIDS Core Strategy

SACIDS has identified the following 8 elements as its core values that will govern its strategic objectives and programme of work:
  1. One Health approach to infectious diseases of humans, animals and ecosystems
  2. Equity between Public Health and Animal Health which is based on mutual trust and is embedded in structures and practices
  3. Virtual Centre concept at regional and national levels
  4. Research Excellence Leadership of joint programmes between academic and national research institutions
  5. Smart partnership with Centres of Science excellence in industrialised countries as well as international research centres. SACIDS will also seek effective South-South-North Partnership, especially through its membership of CORDS (www.cordsnetwork.org)
  6. Community of Practice modus operandi underpinned by inter-sectoral collaboration
  7. Proactive stakeholder and public/community/industry engagement

One Health Focus

The SACIDS One Health focus is to address infectious diseases in the endemic settings of Sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular attention to Southern, Central and East Africa through a collaborative effort between natural and social sciences to advance the understanding of interactions between humans, animals and the environment to improve public and animal health
